Vic McConnell

Vic was born October 2, 1954 at the Atkinson Memorial Hospital to Wilmer “Bud” & Raedean (Cearns) McConnell, the oldest of six children.  He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School from kindergarten through the 10th grade.  He graduated from West Holt High School in 1972.  He then attended Chadron State College for 2 years.
During his growing up years he played baseball, youth KC basketball, did babysitting, mowed lawns, and worked in the hayfields.  While in high school he played football and basketball, belonged to the FFA and raised pigs for his project.
Vic moved to Scottsbluff, NE where he lived with Henry, Ella & Jim Zahradnicek.  He then moved back to Atkinson and worked for Paul Seger Farms for a short time.
One summer day in 1975, at Johnson’s Drive-In in O’Neill, NE he saw a gal with whom he struck up a conversation and they would meet many more evenings at the O’Neill Drive-In Theatre after she got off work.  The romance continued through the winter at the Royal Theatre.  When spring came Vic married Bev (Ziska) Engelhaupt on March 19, 1976 at the Holt County Courthouse.
On May 1, 1976 Vic began working at McConnell Welding, purchasing the business in July of 2002, and remained there until his passing.
Vic played slow pitch softball, bowled on numerous leagues, and coached youth baseball and softball teams while his kids were growing up.  Camping, fishing, & playing cards with friends was a yearly must do with lots of enjoyment and memories galore. Vic was a member of the Atkinson Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Atkinson Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion, and Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Group.  His passion for motorcycles riding was rekindled after his kids were gone.
Vic passed away suddenly on April 22, 2017 at the West Holt Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.
Vic is survived by his wife of 41 years Bev; two daughters Marty Jo and husband Dave Lauridsen of Columbus, NE and Rhonda Jean and husband Nate Christensen of Brandon, SD; a son Jeremy Scott McConnell of Clearwater, NE; 9 grandchildren, Jessica, Paige, & Dylan Lauridsen, Brittany, Logan, and Sydni McConnell, Tyson Rix and Carson & Kobee Christensen; 4 brothers Roger and wife Patricia McConnell of Omaha, NE, Robert McConnell of Rapid City, SD, Patrick McConnell of Orlando, FL, and Timothy and wife Suk McConnell of Tacoma, WA; one sister Dianne and husband David Coffin of Lincoln, NE; aunt Marilyn Thomas of Lincoln, NE; uncle Dick McConnell and wife Karen of Seward, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bud & Raedean, grandson Cameron McConnell, grandparents Eli & Wilma McConnell and Ray & Tillie Cearns; aunts & uncles Robert Thomas, Dean & Dorothy McConnell, and Al & Vivian Krysl.
Memorials may be given to the Atkinson Fire & Rescue Department or the Atkinson Legion Riders.

Atkinson Fire and Rescue Department and the Atkinson Legion Riders are asked to be honor guard at Vic’s funeral services on Friday.

To Vic's family:
I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My God wrap you in his arms and give you comfort now and in the coming days. One of my very first memories of Vic is when Vic and Bev gave my brother and I a ride home from Yankton.

Bev and family,

I am so sorry to hear about Vic's passing. I will cherish the memory of stopping by your house on Easter Sunday to deliver food. Vic still had his witty sense of humor by giving me a hard time about having another baby. You are all in our prayers!
