Lewellyn Hiatt

Lewellyn was the oldest child, born on April 1, 1929, in Merrick County near Fullerton, NE, to Iva (Peck) and Henry Freelend.  She spent her first 20 years in the Swan Lake and Amelia areas before the family moved to Carthage, MO.  She attended school through her sophomore year of high school at Faith, Home and School in Mitchell, South Dakota. She then moved back home to help her parents.  In 1953, she moved to work in Kansas City, including at the Lifeline Children’s Home.
On June 30, 1959, she was united in marriage to Clayton C. Burge.  They moved to a rural farm north of O’Neill, where she spent the next 12 years.  To this union, four daughters were born. Clayton passed away in 1969, leaving her with four small children and practicing to obtain her first driver’s license.

On November 27, 1971, Lewellyn was wed to Paul L. Hiatt.  She then moved to his ranch by Amelia where she spent the next 41 years.  Paul passed away on September 19, 2009.  Lewellyn moved to Wichita, KS in October 2012, where she spent her remaining years closer to her daughters and their families.
Lewellyn enjoyed raising gardens, canning, and flowers.  She was known to have a “green thumb.”  She also enjoyed sewing and was an excellent cook.  She took up quilting and made each grandchild a quilt of their own.

Lewellyn was faithful in church attendance and her affiliations with the Wesleyan Church in O’Neill, the Bethany Free Methodist Church in rural Amelia until its closing, and the Amelia United Methodist Church.  She appreciated so much the letters and cards.  She also was a long-time member of the Gideon’s Ladies Auxiliary.
Lewellyn is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law: Esther (David) Mollhagen of Wichita, KS; Ruth Cox of McPherson, KS; Vera (Kevin) Schultz of Trousdale, KS; and Anita (Sam) Scruggs of Kansas City, MO.

She is survived by ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren:   Jessica Mollhagen, Chris Cox, Brooke Schultz (Travis) Warner, Katie Cox, Tara Mollhagen (Eric) Shepherd, Tyler (Hannah) Schultz, Amanda Odle, Courtney Schultz (Jacob) Urish, Kyla Odle, Leah Mollhagen, and Adriel and Silas Warner.

Lewellyn is survived by her siblings as follows:  Brother, Eldon (May) Freelend of Sarcoxie, MO; Sisters - Rowena Freelend of Wilhoit, AZ; Idona (Gary) Sellno of Higginsville, MO; and Sheryl (Windell) Woolsey of Sarcoxie, MO.  She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Opal Hogemoser, cousins, and many nieces and nephews
Memorials are suggested to The Gideons International or United Methodist Church of Amelia.
